TAORMINA

Hotel Continental Taormina Sicily

One of Sicily's most famous sights is Taormina, a spectacular resort city on the east coast. Hanging high above the sea, with handy cable car access to the beach, it's long been the island's romantic cliffside haunt of aristocrats at play. Taormina's setting impressed the ancient Greeks — probably for its strategic location. Its Greek-Roman theater must be the most dramatically situated theater from the ancient world — and it still hosts open-air concerts. (Paul Simon, Tony Bennett, Bocelli, and Elton John have performed here.)

For nearly a century Taormina has been the gateway through which travellers from all over the world have come to know Sicily

From here you can reach every corner of the island in a short time, thanks to an effective road network. Major Sicilian towns, such as Catania, Messina, Palermo, Agrigento and Syracuse can be reached from anywhere between half an hour and two and a half hours. Mount Etna is only about twenty kilometres away and within about forty minutes you can reach its upper slopes. Increasingly, tourists like to travel by car or bus in order to explore some of the most remote places. A number of English-language guided bus tours depart from Taormina to places such as Agrigento, Piazza Armerina, Palermo and Syracuse.

From Goethe to the present day, Taormina has always been the island's calling card. The town, known throughout the world as 'the pearl of the Ionian Sea' is characterized by the beauty of its landscapes and its seemingly eternal spring climate.

There are many ways to spend your free time in Taormina. You can enjoy concerts of classical and modern music in Taormina's ancient Greek Theatre. As well as the many festivals and annual events, such as Taormina Arte or Taormina Filmfest, which bring national and international music and film stars to Taormina.

The sea at Taormina has always played an important economic role for the community, constantly changing and reinventing itself over time: in the past the sea offered employment to a multitude of local fishermen, today it is also a major tourist attraction.

Taormina sits high up on the cliffs, with beautiful beaches stretching out below, such as the small Bay of Mazzarò, sheltered to the south by Capo Sant'Andrea, rich with caves, among which is the Grotta Azzurra (the Blue Grotto). Here, the sound of fishermen calling visitors for a boat trip echoes across the beaches. Beyond the headland extends a gracious bay sweeping round to the Bella island which is linked to the shore by a narrow strip of land. The longest beaches, Spisone and Mazzeo, extend north of Mazzarò.
